Qualcomm has now officially presented the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. As you can see from the name, there is a new name structure, because previously the SoCs had three-digit model numbers. Xiaomi has also announced that the new SoC will be used in the Xiaomi 12 – but Motorola could be the first to release an 8-Gen-1 smartphone.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 presented
The US manufacturer Qualcomm has now officially presented the new Snapdragon SoC for mobile devices, as reported by Golem. This is accompanied by a new name structure: The last SoCs had three-digit model numbers such as 865 or 888. Now there is a name assignment with a number that stands for the performance class and a generation specification. The new top SoC from Qualcomm is called Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The manufacturer uses the new ARMv9 technology. The SoC is said to have been noticeably improved thanks to a faster 5G modem and the artificial intelligence used. In the manufacturing process, Qualcomm goes from 5nm to 4nm – smaller production enables more efficient chips. The Snapdragon chips are built at Samsung Foundry. The new architecture should make the CPU part of the SoC 20 percent faster or – depending on the configuration – with the same performance as previous SoCs, 30 percent more energy-saving.
Premiere in the Xiaomi 12 or Moto Edge X30
In line with the unveiling of the new SoC, Xiaomi has now also published a first teaser that confirms what had been strongly suspected in advance: The upcoming Xiaomi 12 is said to be the first smartphone with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. As Notebookcheck also reports , Xiaomi has announced the use of the new Snapdragon SoC via Twitter and the Chinese social network Weibo. However, it could be that, at least in China, another manufacturer will come into play before Xiaomi. Because Motorola wants to bring the Moto Edge X30 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 on the market in China in the coming week. Xiaomi’s 12 series smartphones are not expected until the end of December.
