Twice as fast as its predecessor: New WiFi standard is in the test phase

A new WiFi standard is being tested by the first companies. This should enable twice the download speed compared to its predecessor. We have summarized the most important information about WiFi 7 for you here.

WiFi 7 is in the starting blocks. The first companies are already testing the new technology, as “teltarif” reports . The standard called IEEE 802.11be will enable a gross data throughput of up to 46 GBit/s. However, the net download speed should “only” be 2.88 Gbit/s. That’s still double WiFi 6, though.

The mandatory introduction of the 6 GHz frequency band is also exciting. This was first introduced in 2020 with WiFi 6E. It was the first innovation in this area in more than 20 years. In 1999, the 5 GHz band was established with WiFi 2 (802.11a).

New WLAN standard: WiFi 7 should start in 2024 at the latest

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has been working on WiFi 7 for three years. In order to achieve the higher speed, improved components are required. Among other things, the quadrature amplitude modulation was increased from 1024 to 4096. The channel bandwidth jumps from 160 to 320 MHz.

When exactly WiFi 7 will celebrate its market launch is not yet clear. Some companies are hoping for a start in 2023, while the IEEE is assuming March 2024.
