Xiaomi 12 Pro: premium in everything

Xiaomi has recently presented its top of the range Xiaomi 12 Pro. It has all the credentials to become a premium smartphone. It has proved to be a good product. This product has great improvements compared to previous ones.

The company has launched three new devices Xiaomi 12, 12X, and 12 Pro.

Xiaomi 12 Pro not only looks at power, but particularly relies on a renewed design compared to the last generation. The back cover is in frosted glass, Gorilla Glass Victus, very pleasant to the touch and above all useful in not showing marks and fingerprints, while the continuous frame is in aluminum. The camera module changes its look and is renewed with a more elegant design . The island that houses the three cams and the LED flash remains protruding but becomes rectangular in shape with a large main sensor at the top (which protrudes slightly in turn) and two smaller sensors below on the left side. The Xiaomi 5G writing is also engraved on the back cover.

The front is dominated by a large curved display on the sides with thin bezels. The slightly rounded and thicker corners still remain as seen in the last generation, not exactly the best on the eye. In the upper part, in the center of the display, we find a small hole that houses the selfie cam. The frame houses on the right side the volume rocker and the on and off button while the left side remains completely uncluttered. In the lower part we find the SIM slot, the first microphone, the USB type-C port and the system speaker. Finally, at the top the frame houses a second speaker, the second microphone and the infrared port, always useful for controlling TVs, air conditioners and other appliances.

The dimensions of the smartphone are the following: 163.6 x 74.6 x 8.16 mm while the weight reaches 205 grams . The device in hand, thanks to the curved edges, seems even thinner than it already is. The touch and feel is good although the dimensions are not exactly compact. The feeling is that of having a premium product in your hands, with a high-level build quality, studied in detail.

Inside the package, in addition to the smartphone, we find a very fast 120W power supply , the USB-USB Type-C cable and a transparent silicone cover. The supplied charger is rather bulky and heavy to carry around, on the other hand it can charge the smartphone in a very short time.

Xiaomi 12 Pro features a 6.73 – inch HDR10 + super AMOLED LTPO 2.0 display with WQHD + resolution (1440×3200 pixels) and a pixel density of 521 ppi. The refresh rate reaches 120Hz while the touch refresh rate reaches 480Hz.

In the settings it is possible to set the refresh rate in two different ways:

Automatic : Adjusts the refresh rate dynamically based on scenarios to balance performance and power consumption. In detail, what is also called “adaptive”.

Custom : Here, the user chooses which refresh rate to use between 60Hz, 90Hz and 120Hz. The brand recommends using the automatic mode, but no one forbids keeping the display fixed at 120Hz.

In the Color Scheme of the Settings screen, you can choose between different calibrations, all of which can be customized. There are three main profiles:

Vivid : mode that sets a profile faithful to the DCI-P3 standard, with a cold white balance by default, but configurable by the user.

Intense : mode that sets a profile with extreme maximum saturations, pushing the actual limits of the panel. It is not as faithful as Vivido, but aims to guarantee an immediate wow effect.

Original color : mode that sets a different color profile based on the content being played, choosing between DCI-P3 and sRGB, with a fairly faithful white balance according to the D65 standard.

In addition to the basic presets, the company allows the user to access various  advanced settings , which enable the possibility to choose between the original color range of the content being played (a bit like Original Color), or to lock the gamut to P3  or  sRGB references  . The difference with the main profiles lies in the possibility to  finely configure every aspect of the chromatic reproduction, for example with the three RGB sliders of the primary components, or by acting individually on values such as Hue, Saturation, Gamma and Contrast. The smartphone is already very valid with the factory calibration, however the user can configure the chromatic aspect of the device as he sees fit, based on his own precision needs.

Display Analysis

We carried out the measurements at the colorimeter of the Xiaomi 12 Pro display and we generally found excellent values in terms of accuracy. Let’s start with the maximum luminance: in the default mode, Vivid, we measured  1344 nits  with an unmeasurable contrast ratio due to the AMOLED display present. This is a very high value even considering that it is a top of the range, the best ever recorded in our laboratory if we exclude the top of the latest generation Samsung range. It goes without saying that with these values Xiaomi 12 Pro can be used anywhere, without any compromise.

Playback of SDR content is of extremely high quality on the Xiaomi 12 Pro, with a chromatic fidelity (in the most precise mode, Original Color) quantifiable in an average DeltaE equal to 1.9 taking as reference the colors of the Macbeth Color Checker. This is a result that allows you to compare the smartphone panel to a semi-professional monitor, so even photo and video processing can be done without too much trouble on this smartphone. The excellent result was achieved thanks to a gamut faithful to the P3 reference, a good white point calibration and a gamma curve corrected according to the reference (2.2). We also carried out our analyzes on the measurements made with the Intense mode, the most extensive in terms of maximum saturation: in this case we have a wider gamut than the DCI-P3 standard and a gamma curve
