Link between antioxidant supplements and stroke revealed

A new study has found that beta-carotene supplements are associated with serious problems that can be fatal.

In the study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, researchers looked at data from 884 previous studies based on 883,627 people.

When the effects of omega fatty acids, magnesium, zinc and other supplements were analyzed, the researchers found that synthetic supplements that were made from the antioxidant beta-carotene had a higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease and from any cause.

According to dietitian Joanna Berdoz, the results of the research show how important it is to go for a good diet, such as omega-3 fatty acids and folate. Research has shown that the presence of these two substances in the supplement helps to prevent the risk of heart disease occurrence.

Joanna Berdoz said that the reasons behind the increase in the risk of cardiovascular disease due to beta-carotene supplements are not fully known. However, evidence suggests that beta-carotene supplements have no benefit for the heart.

"We do know that excess of any ingredient supplement can potentially cause side effects," he said. So if you think you need supplements, it’s important to talk to your doctor.

Jonah added that beta-carotene supplements are not prescribed to the general public. Another study found that beta-carotene supplements are harmful to people who smoke cigarettes, which increases the risk of lung cancer. Researchers also know that cigarette smoking is not only a risk factor for lung cancer, but also for other issues such as heart attack and diabetes.
