How often can you take ibuprofen?

The head is pounding, the stomach is throbbing or the whole body is feverish : ibuprofen is a useful answer to many physical ailments. But you should not exceed a maximum daily dose of 1200 grams .

Taking ibuprofen incorrectly can have serious consequences for you and your health . It is therefore important not to take the painkiller for too long.

  • Adults and adolescents older than 12 years can  take a maximum of 1200 milligrams of ibuprofen per day .  This corresponds to three over-the-counter tablets. Younger pain patients receive significantly lower doses and should only be treated with medication in consultation with a doctor.
  • Incidentally, only the ibuprofen with single doses of 400 milligrams are freely available . For stronger dosages of 600 or 800 milligrams, you need a prescription.
  • You should also wait four to six hours before you take another pill.
  • Incidentally, you should not take ibuprofen for more than four days at a time without consulting a doctor. It has now been proven that  overdose  and prolonged use of ibuprofen can cause the heart to fail.
  • If you use over-the-counter painkillers for too long in acute pain, there is also a risk of addiction . This goes so far that you can develop withdrawal symptoms as soon as you stop taking ibuprofen and the like.
