Bernacki blood test

The Biernacki test, also known as the Biernacki reaction, is a blood test that measures the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). The ESR is a measure of how quickly red blood cells settle in a test tube. A high ESR can be a sign of inflammation, infection, or other medical conditions.

The Biernacki test was first developed in 1897 by Edmund Biernacki, a Polish physician. The test is named after him. The Biernacki test is a simple and inexpensive test that is often used as a screening test for a variety of medical conditions.

The Biernacki test is performed by drawing a blood sample from the patient. The blood sample is then placed in a test tube and allowed to sit for one hour. The distance that the red blood cells have settled in the test tube is then measured.

A normal ESR is less than 15 millimeters per hour. An ESR of 15 to 30 millimeters per hour is considered to be mildly elevated. An ESR of more than 30 millimeters per hour is considered to be highly elevated.

A high ESR can be a sign of a variety of medical conditions, including:

  • Inflammation
  • Infection
  • Cancer
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Thyroid disease

The Biernacki test is not a definitive test for any of these conditions. However, a high ESR can be a sign that there is a problem and that further testing is needed.

If you have a high ESR, your doctor will likely order additional tests to determine the cause of your high ESR. These tests may include a complete blood count (CBC), a blood chemistry panel, and an imaging test, such as an X-ray or a CT scan.
