Recent research shows that losing weight can reduce the severity of type 2 diabetes by at least five years.
Data from the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial showed that a quarter of people who started a low-calorie diet, which showed a decrease in the severity of the disease for two years, later decreased the severity of the disease after three years.
According to the research, these people did not even need to take medication to balance blood sugar levels and they lost an average of 9 kg in five years.
Roy Taylor, professor of medicine and metabolism at the University of Newcastle, said that studies have shown that weight loss has the potential to reverse type 2 diabetes by eliminating fat from the liver and pancreas. He added that the elimination of fat from the liver causes normalization of insulin sensitivity.
Diabetes is a serious disease that increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, narrowing of blood vessels and nerve damage. Obesity is a major driver of type 2 diabetes. People with obesity are 80 times more likely to have diabetes than other normal people.
