Boosters or not: For the time being, the majority of people do not require a fourth vaccine dose

For the time being, the mandatory vaccination campaign has failed, and the Omikron outbreak is gradually declining. Nobody knows for certain which corona variations will emerge in autumn or how contagious and dangerous they will be. But what happens now, in the summer, and especially in the autumn, with vaccinations? Who requires the second booster and when is the best time to provide it?

Who needs the second booster and who doesn’t?

Not only for COVID-19, but for viral infections in general, immune healthy, younger individuals often have a reduced risk of developing serious illness than immunocompromised and/or older individuals.

Immune healthy individuals under the age of 70 do not require the second booster, according to immunologist Christine Falk, a member of the Federal Government’s Corona Expert Council. For immunocompetent healthy individuals, the corona vaccine gives long-term protection against severe COVID-19. A booster dose prevents infection only to a limited extent; even regular boosters have little effect. Three experts concur.

Antibodies and T cells go down over time, but they would not disappear completely, according to Falk. Of course, there are also isolated people among the younger ones who are not “high-responders”, whose immune system does not react optimally to the vaccination. Falk considers the age limit chosen by the STIKO to be useful, as there are still many among them with a good immune response, but also some with a weakened, aged immune situation.

The situation is different for immunocompromised people, for example transplanted or cancer patients, and very old people. Your body defenses don’t respond as well to the immunizations. A second refresher makes sense here. Individually tailored, depending on the type of immunodeficiency, possibly also further corona vaccinations. According to a study, 60 percent of women and men living with a lung transplant have not produced any antibodies to the coronavirus at all even after the second vaccination, Falk reports. Here, a third, fourth or even fifth vaccination is extremely important.

WHO: So far no deaths from Omicron have been reported

The WHO estimates the probability that Omicron will spread worldwide as “increased”. It has classified the variant as “worrying”.

Corona Sample

Deaths as a result of an infection with the coronavirus variant Omicron have not yet been reported to the World Health Organization (WHO). WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier announced on Friday in Geneva. The WHO is collecting the data on the spread of the new coronavirus variant and evaluating it. But he had “not yet seen any reports of deaths in connection with Omicron,” added Lindmeier.

The WHO spokesman emphasized that “all findings” on the spread of Omicron would be collected by the WHO. This will mean that knowledge will expand over time, especially if the countries concerned are specifically looking for the Omicron variant. So there will be an accumulation of knowledge, but “hopefully not about deaths”.

Omicron rated the risk as “very high”

The new variant was first discovered in South Africa a week ago. It has now been detected in around two dozen countries, including Germany. Omicron has 32 mutations compared to the previously common coronavirus, so it is to be feared that the variant will be more easily transmitted.

The WHO estimated the probability that Omicron will spread worldwide as “increased”. She has already classified the variant as “worrying” and assessed the risk from Omikron as “very high”.

Data released on the effectiveness of Chinese vaccines for the prevention of delta

Covid-19 vaccines manufactured by Chinese companies are very effective in preventing corona type delta.

This was revealed in two different medical research reports in China.

According to a study , vaccines developed by Chinese companies to control the Delta epidemic in the Chinese province of Guangzhou proved to be 59% effective in preventing symptomatic disease.

The study found that two doses of the Chinese vaccine provided 70.2% protection against mild symptoms of the disease, while their effectiveness in preventing serious symptoms was 100%.

This is said to be the first real-world data on the effectiveness of Chinese companies’ vaccines against the corona-type delta.

The study was based on data from 153 confirmed cases of epidemics and 475 close contacts in Guangzhou between May 18 and June 20.

Research has shown that vaccines from Chinese companies are still effective in preventing the Delta type.

Of the 105 cases examined, 105 had mild to moderate symptoms, while 16 had severe symptoms.

However, patients with severe symptoms were not vaccinated.

Of those surveyed, 61.3 percent used two doses of the sinovac vaccine, while 27.5 percent used the sinophorm vaccine.

10.4% of people used a combination of the two companies’ vaccines.

The study also found, based on limited samples, that the efficacy of single-shot vaccines against Covid-19 was only 14%.

Research has shown that two-dose Chinese vaccines are more effective against the disease in women than in men.

The use of these vaccines was found to have a mild disease prevention rate of 70.4% in men and 79.1% in women.

The results of the study were published in the medical journal “Emerging Microbes and Infections”.

The second study, conducted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, examined the effects of three doses of vaccine developed by Anhui Zefi Longcom Biopharmaceuticals.

Examination of 28 serum samples from people who used the vaccine revealed that the vaccine was capable of inactivating several types of corona.

The researchers said that the vaccine maintains its effectiveness against the highly contagious type of corona, Delta.

However, research has shown that the vaccine is less effective against corona strains beta and gamma.

The vaccine was approved for emergency use in March 2021 in China and Uzbekistan.

The results of the study were published in the medical journal The Lancet.

The effectiveness of vaccines may decline over time, but solid protection remains, research reports

Protection against coronavirus from vaccines decreases over time, but the risk of hospitalization is much lower even weeks after vaccination.

This is released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention three research reports were stated in.

The data from these research reports came as the United States decided to give people a third dose of the vaccine from September.

CDC Director Rochelle Valensky said during a briefing at the White House that an analysis of data from late July to early August revealed three points.

One point, he said, is that vaccine protection against Covid-19 decreases over time, and another is that the vaccine’s efficacy remains solid to prevent serious disease, hospitalization and death. The third is that the effectiveness of the vaccine as a whole has declined against the Delta variant..

All three reports, published in the CDC’s weekly scientific journal, reinforce the idea that vaccines alone cannot eradicate the epidemic.

Experts from the New York State Department of Health and the Albany School of Public Health, who were involved in the study, said face masks and other precautions should be part of vaccination.

All three research reports examined the efficacy of the vaccine and compared the rate of illness or hospitalization in vaccinated individuals with those who did not use vaccines.

A study in New York looked at the rate of vaccine protection in the state with the spread of the delta.

The researchers found that the efficacy of vaccines had declined slightly, from 92 percent in May to 80 percent in late July.

During this period, 20% of new cases in New York State and 15% of patients admitted to hospitals from Covid-19 were those who had been vaccinated.

Another study examined the effectiveness of vaccines in nursing home residents in view of the spread of Delta.

The results found that the efficacy of vaccines was 75% from March to May, which dropped to 53% in June and July.

The third study analyzed patients from 21 hospitals in 18 states and found a solid precaution against hospitalization after vaccination.

During summer months, when the corona-type delta was spreading rapidly, the effectiveness of vaccines to prevent hospital admissions remained at 86 percent.

Vaccines were 90% effective in adults with weak immune systems.

According to researchers, a number of factors affect the effectiveness of vaccines.

For example, if people avoid immunizations such as face masks after vaccination, their immune system may be weakened.

One criterion, the researchers said, is that if people who do not use the vaccine to gain immunity through the disease, the effectiveness of the vaccine will also decrease.

He said that such research reports prove the importance of coronavirus vaccines and their limitations.

“If precautions are not taken, we will see more and more breakthrough infections. Vaccines are very, very helpful, but they alone cannot eradicate the code,” he said.

Most children affected with Covid-19 do not show symptoms, research says

Children infected with the corona virus often do not show any symptoms of the disease.
This was revealed in a medical study conducted in the United States.

An estimated one-third of people with Covid do not have symptoms of the disease.

The  Yale School of Medical Health conducted a systematic analysis of data from more than 350 research reports published by April 2021. The study found that asymptomatic disease is more common in children than in older people or people who already have the disease.

The research team estimates that 46.7% of children do not have any symptoms.

The researchers said the findings were even more worrying because children lived in a confined space with children much older than themselves in educational institutions.

He said that if the school administration was limited to monitoring the symptoms, the risk of Covid-19 super spreader events could also increase in children without symptoms.

“Patients without symptoms can also transmit the virus to others, which is why the use of face masks is so important, especially when educational institutions are open,” he said.

The results of the study were published in the medical journal PANS.

The findings come as a study conducted in the US in early August 2021 found that children infected with the Covid-19 could transmit the virus to other people in their home.

A study published in the medical journal New England Journal of Medicine examined the spread of coronavirus in the homes of children attending a sleepaway camp in the US state of Georgia last summer.

The investigation found that the children participating in the camp passed the code to their families on their return home.

The researchers said that research has shown that corona can spread easily to family members from school-age children and adults may have to be hospitalized due to the disease.

He said that in the houses where the disease was transmitted from children to people, half of the family members fell victim to the disease.

The researchers said that the risk of spreading the virus to children could be reduced by social distance and the use of face masks.
